PRODUCT DESCRIPTION:

The Explore Scientific AR127 Air-Spaced Doublet is a classic air-spaced, crown-and-flint doublet achromatic refractor reborn to produce a superior-class optical figure in a short (f/6.5) focal length design. With the AR127 model, you will be impressed by the stunning images at the eyepiece, all at a small fraction of the price you'd pay for a comparably sized apochromatic refractor.

Designed to handle the rigors of public star parties and educational outreach, the Explore Scientific AR Series telescopes come with heavy-duty, high-quality components, including a 2" dual-speed focuser, a one-piece 2" diagonal with 99% dielectric coatings, Explore Scientific Hybrid Finder Scope Base installed with an 8 X 50 non-illuminated straight-through finderscope and quick release bracket and a cradle ring assembly with Vixen-style dovetail mount. Add a few eyepieces and the alt-azimuth or equatorial mount of your choice, and you'll be ready to discover the Universe!

Interferometric data on your newly purchased and registered Explore achromatic refractor is available upon request after 120 days of ownership. Contact Customer Service for more information.

I haven't tested the optics yet but I'm concerned about the complete lack of documentation on this scope from Explore Scientific. There is no apparent way to rotate the focusers. Evidently this was once a feature - why it's gone is a mystery.

Visual viewing is wonderful and produces bright images for even old eyes! Though a bit heavy the handle makes transporting and attaching to one's mount easier. It can also do reasonably good astrophotography IF one shoots in RAW and uses something like the darkroom RAW app to remove a lot of the chromatic aberration and some more post-processing (that is normal for an achromatic refractor, anyway.)

By the way, I have re-purposed the included finderscope and made it into a guidescope:

This is my first real telescope and I love it. Fantastic views of the moon and I recently was able to see Saturn and Jupiter. This scope exceeded my expectations and the customer service is great. Thanks ES, you have a customer for life.

I only used it 1 evening so far.. First off this is a beautiful telescope very well made with lots of thought and no plastic. I purchased this as an upgrade to my other brand 90mm st. Boy am I glad I decided on this.. Saturn was amazing with 2 of its moons! Next was the Dumbell nebula again amazing.. Then I moved on to star hopping and clusters the different colored stars looked like jewel's very impressed with the ar127 I definitely recommend this scope! And I own other types of scopes a 8sct and 10inch dobsonian. And I see this one getting used primarily. I also look forward to my trip in August to Branson Missouri mostly because my side excursion will be a trip to Springdale AR to visit explore scientific and maybe return home with the 152 mak! Lol

This telescope is far better than any other in the same price range. CA isn't terrible and a cheap #8 yellow filter helps. The focuser is a 2" two speed dielectric coated mirror. The finder scope has too narrow field of view so I replaced it with a red dot finder. The over all build quality and size is impressive (much larger than it looks in a photo). I purchased this scope and Twilight I package deal. Because of the wiggle factor, vibration, I can't recommend the Twilight I for this scope. You would be better served by getting the Bresser EXOS-2 GEM or EXOS-2GT GEM. I ordered the EXOS-2 non go to and plan some day soon to get a 6" CAT for the Twilight I mount.
